Surinder is always looking beyond the horizon and loves spending his time delving into the mysteries of the Universe, a place he feels we are not alone. While he would play cricket 24/7 if he could, when he is not playing he is always seen helping out with ground maintenance. His signature look is rolling the turf wicket with the club’s 4 ton roller!
Favourite Memory: Surinder’s favorite memory is of an incredible match at York University in which he took 2 stunning catches to help the Ramblers tie the game from what seemed a lost situation. The occasion was so incredible that fellow club member Amir Kolia wrote a little story about it:
So here’s the scene: The Masters play against YorkU at YorkU in what was an annual clash of the titans. Early season, fresh spring morning, light dew, freshly cut grass, the anticipation of the upcoming cricket season can be felt.
The Ramblers batted first and put on a par score at best. Bowling in the 2nd innings near the late overs of the game, YorkU is looking well on the road to victory. Mr Puri, looking like our very VVS Laxman, is in the slips with his Adidas shades. The game is reflecting off his sunglasses’ lenses as the sun is setting on the day and the game appears to be setting for the Ramblers.
At that time, The bowler delivers a good length delivery that the YorkU batter edges. As if from the dodging bullet scene from The Matrix, Mr Puri dove and took an absolutely spectacular one handed catch! The fact that he did it so nonchalantly, it was as though the man did this every day and today we all were just fortunate enough to witness it live.
As great as that was, unbeknownst to us there was much more in store! Mr Puri again decided the game needed something amazing. The bowler did his thing, got the batter’s edge and Puri The Poacher defies gravity, pure physics and logic with yet another catch for the ages. One usually witnesses one great catch a season but to be able to get two in the same match was beyond anybody’s imagination!
Best of all, the Ramblers get a wicket off the last delivery of the game TO TIE THE MATCH! To do that from the position they were in felt as good as any of the BEST WINS of my life!”
